Up next on The Kingdom Light, I’m gonna differentiate between conviction and condemnation. These two often get conflated and confused, so we’ll look at the difference between them. I’ll also deal with what causes each to occur. Along the way, we’ll learn that all of us are convicted – but not everyone will be condemned. Stick around.

Conviction versus Condemnation. What’s the difference? Which is worse? And what’s the point of it all? Let me start by stating the obvious – sin separates us from God. It prevents us from enjoying the close relationship with our Creator that we all need. That’s a relationship our spirits crave, and we are never truly fulfilled in life without it.
Here’s where conviction comes in. Conviction of sin is a merciful act of the Holy Spirit. It’s how He calls it to our attention and says, “This is in the way of you experiencing a closer and better relationship with me.” We experience a feeling of guilt and an inner understanding that we’ve done something that hurts the Lord’s heart.
Remember when you were a kid and did something wrong? That pain in your spirit was conviction. You knew you’d messed up. Worse yet, Mom or Dad may have given you a look of disapproval because of it. You saw their disappointment and felt even more awful. Often times, that feeling of conviction was even worse than any punishment you might receive because you knew you’d let them down by doing wrong.
It’s like that with our Heavenly Father. He loves us more than we know, and it definitely disappoints Him when we sin. The thing is, wrongdoing must be rectified. There has to be a penalty for it. As the guilty party, we are required to pay a price. Sadly, the cost of sin is steep. This is where condemnation enters the picture.
Condemnation for your sin is what comes at the time of judgement. When you break the law, you get arrested and taken before a judge. Conviction means you are found guilty, and then the judge sentences you to pay a price. But being found guilty of sin before God – the Great Judge of Heaven – means being condemned to far worse than a monetary fine or prison time.
Your sin is like a stain on your soul. Sin cannot stand in the presence of a Holy God. And since it then separates you from Him, the ultimate price of sin is eternal separation from God – that’s called hell. While that sounds harsh, the Bible warns us that “the wage of sin is death.”
But there’s Good News! It’s summed up nicely in this passage…
Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
He paid the penalty for your sin, so if you’ve accepted Him as Savior, His blood and forgiveness have you covered. In the courtroom of heaven, satan accuses you of all the bad stuff you ever did.

Then your defense attorney, Jesus, who has never lost a case, stands up and says…
“That’s not the whole truth. My client is covered by the statute which states, ‘Any and all wrongdoing shall be forgotten, cast as far as the east from the west, never to be remembered again.’ This is also known as the Clean Slate Clause. I personally paid the price for all the above on Calvary’s hill. To whit, I request that all charges against my client be summarily dismissed.”

Before the devil can utter another word, the gavel slams down and God says, “So ordered. Case dismissed! You are free to go. Enter now into your heavenly reward, my child.” Why?! Because God LOVES YOU SO MUCH that He made it possible for you to be ransomed from the grips of sin forever.
Thats the good news of the Gospel of Christ! And it’s why we all need Jesus. Without Him, we’d be condemned to eternity far away from God in a place where torment never ends, because the price of our sin can never be paid off without the blood of Jesus. If you think conviction is uncomfortable, trust me, it’s nothing compared with eternal condemnation.
Here’s something I want you to understand. When I align myself with what the Word of God calls sin, I’m not pointing a finger at you or anyone else. If I quote scripture that says this is sin or that is sin, I’m not hating on you for your sin. I have my own sin I struggle with, too. You have to realize that sin is a big deal, but your sin isn’t a bigger deal than mine (and vice versa).
And if you do feel convicted, remember, that’s the Holy Spirit doing that – not me or anyone else. And it’s a merciful thing to be corrected by the Holy Spirit. It gives you an opportunity to make things right, to repent, and ask for Jesus to take an active role in your life. Conviction leads to repentance, and repentance is followed by forgiveness.
Sin is a heart problem. Pray for God to purify your heart. It’s a process that takes time. But if you trust in Him and cultivate a relationship with Him, your life will be changed for the better.
When conviction comes, thank God for it. He lovingly corrects His children because He wants what’s best for them. Don’t let the guilt turn your heart cold. Satan will use that to falsely condemn you. But Jesus wants to deliver you from your sin, forgive you, and present you to the Father as blameless. Let go of pride and let the blood of Jesus wash you clean.
Let me say another thing here. If at some point in the past you were hurt by the church, that wasn’t God that hurt you. I’ve been in some pretty hurtful situations in church before, too. But God never hurt me. He’s the only One who could heal me.
People are imperfect beings. That includes anyone who attends a church. Often times, people will let you down. Yes, even people at church. Sometimes well-meaning people goof up. Other times a bad spirit can creep in and cause strife within the church and cause you to be let down. But don’t let church-hurt steer you away from God.
Satan loves that. He loves seeing people turn away from God because of church-hurt. He’ll tell you, “See how hypocritical these people are?! You don’t need that kind of stress and frustration in your life. Go your own way, and you’ll be fine.” But it’s a lie!
When church-hurt happens, that’s a great time to draw closer to God. Talk to Him about your pain. He cares. Seek His guidance. He wants to help you grow through those hurt feelings. We need Him in our lives all the time, but even moreso in times of strife. So hold fast to Him.
God will never let you down. He will never fail you. And even in times when you fail Him, His Holy Spirit will remind you through conviction of sin that He’s still there for you. He’s always for you, always ready to forgive and restore. And there’s nothing greater than living in the loving presence of God the Father, with your path illuminated by the Kingdom Light.
